What is an Interest Rate Buy-Down?

Mortgage loans available with interest rate reductions during the first two years are called 2-1 buy-down programs. This means your interest rate will drop by two percent in the first year, one percent in the second year, and return to the full interest rate by the third year. A 3-2-1 buy-down program will reduce your interest rate in the first and second year, and your rate will remain at a discounted level in year three and beyond.
